수많은 사람들이 신장이식을 기다리고, 누군가는 신장이식으로 살고, 누군가는 결국 자신과 매치되지 않는 신장을 이식받지 못해 세상을 떠나기도 한다. Susan 은 운이 좋게 신장이식을 받아 몸을 회복하고, 친구였던 Dick 은 결국 세상을 떠난다. 그 사실에 힘들어하는 Susan 에게 Roy 가 해주는 말.

Susan :
he sai, I was on a lucky streak. and he was right. I am but, why?
why do I keeping winning while other people lose? and why did I get a kidney while good people died? It doesn't make any sense.

Roy :
I served in Korea with this guy, Joe Dansak.
Funny as hell, he made whiskey sours in his helmet. One day, we're out on a patrol.
I felt something whizz past my ear. I turned and looked, and Joe was on the ground.

Susan : He was dead?

Roy :
yeah. That night, I asked the sergent, "Why was it him and not me?"
He sort of shook his head and said, "Why ask?"

Susan :
"Why ask?" So you're trying to tell me.. That it is.. random.

Roy :
I'm trying to do anything I can to get you to stop crying, honey.
You're ona lucky streak. Why know why? just enjoy it.

Susan :
But what happens when my luck runs out?
I know.. "Why ask?"

Roy :
